Attilio Labis (5 September 1936 – 26 January 2023) was a French ballet dancer and trainer. He was considered a star of the Paris Opera.[1][2]

Early life

Attilio Labis was born in 1936 to a Sicilian father and French mother. He started his coaching at the Opéra de Paris when he was nine years old and rose by way of the ranks of the school.[1]

Dance career

In 1952, Labis was accepted into the corps de ballet Paris Opera Ballet, however in 1958 he had to affix the army. Upon the completion of his military service, he got here back and successfully auditioned for a “Premier Danseur” (First soloist) position after just one week of training. [4] He carried out as a Danseur Étoile (principal dancer) in the Paris Opera Ballet from 1960 to 1972, then taught the corporate as a ballet trainer till his retirement. [3] He was promoted to “Danseur Étoile” (principal dancer) roughly one year later, after André Malraux noticed him dance “Pas de Dieux”, a choreography by Gene Kelly, and really helpful he be promoted.

Labis was regarded as having brought many technical innovations to the French faculty, together with extra acrobatic steps in solos and duets, and moving the foot greater to the “retiré au genou” (knee height) position for pirouettes, from the previous “à la cheville” (ankle top) place.

Labis typically carried out together with his spouse, “Étoile” Christine Vlassi, as well as with other “Étoiles” comparable to Margot Fonteyn and Claude Bessy.

He originated the function of Siegfried in the Vladimir Bourmeister staging of Swan Lake on the Paris Opera Ballet.

Demise

Labis died on 26 January 2023, on the age of 86.[5][6]
