Excited about “Salakkok Seaside”? Nine Reasons why It’s Time To Stop!Marian Maguire (born 1962) is a lithographer from New Zealand. She is thought for juxtaposing landscapes, historical characters, and legendary figures from New Zealand and ancient Greece, mixing the realism of 19th-century colonial prints with the extra stylized designs of Greek black-determine pottery and Māori wooden carvings.[1][2][3]

Life and education

Maguire was born in 1962 in Christchurch. She earned a BFA at the College of Canterbury in 1984. Has additionally studied on the Tamarind Institute in the US. [4][5] She returned to New Zealand in 1987 and set up a print studio and later a print gallery there. She has additionally taught printmaking on the Ilam College of Wonderful Arts at Canterbury. [5]

Works

Maguire’s early printmaking work included figures, architectural components, and (by the late nineteen nineties) historic Greek culture.[5]

The prints of her work on New Zealand and historic Greece are organized into sequence, including:

Southern Myths (2001), which transported Achilles and Ajax into the new Zealand panorama.[1]

The Odyssey of Captain Cook (2003-2005), which mixed 19th-century historical figures reminiscent of Captain Cook and the Māori chief Natai with Greek imagery.[1][5]

The Labors of Herakles (2006-2008), during which Hercules takes part in New Zealand occasions such because the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.[1][3][5]

Titokowaru’s Dilemma (2008-2011), a dialogue on struggle and passive resistance between Tītokowaru and Socrates that compares scenes from The Iliad with events from Māori history.[2][5]

In 2015, she shifted media along with her sequence Feats, Pursuits & Limitless Toil of seven painted door panels and 4 etchings, persevering with the mixture of Greek and New Zealand themes. The works on this sequence had been partly inspired by Maguire’s experiences dwelling by the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.[6]

Maguire’s works are within the collections of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki,[7] the Museum of new Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa,[8] Puke Ariki,[9] the Nationwide Maritime Museum in London,[10] and the British Museum,[11] amongst others.[4]
