Bunaken is an island of 8 km2, a part of the Bunaken Nationwide Marine Park. It belongs administratively to the municipality of Manado. Bunaken is situated on the northern tip of the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Scuba diving attracts many visitors to the island.

Bunaken National Park extends over an space of 890.65 km2 of which solely 3% is terrestrial, together with Bunaken Island, as well as the islands of Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen.

The waters of Bunaken National Marine Park are up to 1,566 m deep in Manado Bay, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 29 °C. [2] It has a excessive range of – corals, fish, echinoderms and sponges. It also claims to have seven instances more genera of coral than Hawaii,[1] and has more than 70% of all the identified fish species of the Indo-Western Pacific. Notably, seven of the eight species of large clams globally occur in Bunaken.

Oceanic currents could clarify, partially, why Bunaken National Marine Park has such a high stage of biodiversity. The gobies, smallish fish with bulging eyes and modified fins that allow them to attach to exhausting surfaces, are essentially the most various but least identified group of fish in the park. This is especially true on the south facet of the crescent-shaped Bunaken Island, mendacity in the heart of the park.
